Yangon Institute of Technology

BACKGROUND

The present Yangon Institute of Technology (Y.I.T) began as a Department of Engineering under the University of Yangon in 1924, offering a four year degree course in Civil Engineering only. However, in 1927, with the construction of a new building on the University estate, which was named The B.O.C. College of Mining and Engineering, the Department of Engineering was moved there. More engineering degree courses were offered later. As the scope of engineering education became more extensive, a larger complex was constructed at Gyogone and Faculty of Engineering was shifted there in 1961. It was called Burma Institute of Technology, which was renamed as Rangon Institute of Technology (R.I.T) in 1963. It was renamed to Yangon Institute of Technology (Y.I.T) in 1989 when Rangoon was renamed to Yangon. With the introduction of of a new education system in 1964, Y.I.T became an independent University offering six-year Bachelor's degree courses as well as post-graduate degree and diploma courses.
